What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) was developed by Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife, Estrid Vodder, and first presented to the public in Paris in 1936. Known as the Dr. Vodder Method, it uses gentle, precise, rhythmic movements of the skin to support lymph flow.

How your lymphatic system supports you?

Your lymphatic system collects excess fluid from around your cells and returns it to your bloodstream, helping maintain fluid balance and prevent swelling.

Proteins attract water, so it also collects proteins that have passed into the surrounding tissues and returns them to your bloodstream. This helps prevent them from holding excess water around your cells.

It also supports your immune defences by carrying immune cells and material from your tissues to lymph nodes, where immune cells help your body respond to infection.

Why is MLD so gentle?

MLD gently stretches and releases the skin in repeated movements. This movement helps tiny lymphatic vessels collect excess fluid, proteins and waste material from the surrounding tissues. It also encourages the lymphatic vessels’ natural pumping action.

Excessive pressure and pain can inhibit this pumping action and slow lymph flow. Each movement’s direction, rhythm and pressure are therefore carefully controlled, keeping treatment gentle, comfortable and pain-free.

Why is oil not used?

For these movements to work, the therapist’s hands need to move with your skin. Oil makes the surface slippery, allowing the hands to slide over the skin and making the controlled stretch harder to achieve.

The Dr. Vodder Method is therefore usually performed without massage oil, allowing the therapist to maintain the contact needed to gently stretch and release the skin.

How might you feel during and after MLD?

The gentle, rhythmic movements of MLD may help reduce sympathetic (“fight or flight”) activity and encourage parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) activity, allowing your body to settle into a calmer, more restful state.

You may feel sleepy, notice tension easing or simply enjoy a quiet sense of relaxation. Gentle touch may also influence how pain signals are processed, helping ease discomfort for some people.

Afterwards, you may feel calmer and more at ease in your body. Everyone responds differently, and these changes can be subtle.

How can you support your lymphatic system?

Your body’s everyday movements and breathing help keep lymph moving. Simple ways to support this include:

  • Move regularly. Muscle contractions help move lymph through the vessels. Walking, gentle ankle movements and short breaks from sitting are easy ways to include movement in your day.

  • Make time for relaxed breathing. Breathing creates pressure changes in your chest that help lymph move towards the bloodstream. Take a moment to breathe slowly and comfortably, without forcing it.

  • Consider MLD as part of your self-care. Alongside everyday movement and breathing, MLD offers a gentle, hands-on way to support lymph flow.

When treatment is not suitable?

I am unable to offer treatment if you currently have any of the following:

  • Lymphoedema or another diagnosed lymphatic condition, as these fall outside my current scope of practice.

  • Unexplained swelling that has not yet been assessed by a healthcare professional.

  • A current blood clot in a deep vein, known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), whether treated or untreated.

  • Heart failure that is unstable or getting worse.

  • Kidney failure.

  • An active infection or inflammation caused by an infection.

  • An acute allergic reaction.

  • Cancer for which treatment has not started or is ongoing, including cancer that has returned or spread.

If any of these apply, please speak with your treating healthcare professional about appropriate care. For lymphoedema or another lymphatic condition, please consult a practitioner with specialist training in its management.
